Delivering Mail with Noel
In Wanganui, I wanted to take a trip up the Whanganui River to see an abandoned bridge in the jungle that they now call “The Bridge to Nowhere.” To see it you have to drive a couple of hours up a paved/dirt road, then get on a jetboat for an hour and then hike for 40 minutes to the bridge. However, since I had no car, the only way for me to get to the jetboat was to connect with the Rural Mail Deliveryman, ride with him while he delivered mail to the people who live on the river road (mainly Maoris), and then have him drop me off at the jetboat (and wait for me to get back). So, this picture is of the Mailman, Noel, delivering the mail. Like all good country folk, the people on the road had some interesting mailboxes, and this one is made from an old microwave (which, if you think about it, makes a perfect waterproof mailbox).
