One of my favorite things about the Outback trek was stopping at roadhouses in the middle of nowhere. A good example is William Creek on the Oodnadatta Track in South Australia. It has a population of two, and the only thing there is a bar with some rooms and a campsite. We stayed there for the night so got to hang out at the bar and chat up the locals. The roadhouse bars are all pretty much the same, with tin roofs and the bar walls and ceilings covered in graffiti and memorablilia left behind by patrons. The bartender shown here had never really tended bar before so I had to help him open beers, remember the prices and figure out the ingredients in drinks. And drink the beers.
