I’m Not a Habits Expert

I’m not a habits expert, and don’t want to pretend that I am one.

You see tons of habit gurus out there relentlessly posting quotes & manifestos about how important good habits are. They’re not wrong, and there are a ton of studies out there to support what they’re saying.

So, you don’t really need me to lecture you, especially since I don’t think they’re really telling us things we we don’t already know:

  • Habits are important, but hard to build
  • Getting help helps
  • Tracking progress can be motivating & satisfying

I wanted to build a habit, but none of the other habit trackers out there were working for me. So I built the “Did You Do it Today?” web app last year.

I’ve used it since then, and here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Making a formal commitment, with $kin in the game, is crucial
  • Knowing the daily check-in message is coming later that day is like having a little accountability buddy on my shoulder
  • Ensuring I stay above 50% lights a 🔥 in me belly on low motivation days/weeks

I’m still no guru, but after using DYDit for 229 days, I think I’m now an expert on what works for me, and it’s exactly what I’ve built into the app.
