Independence is All-Consuming

Independence is all-consuming. Building, selling, and supporting an app as a solopreneur means a shit-ton of work. You have 1,001 things to do at any moment, and only yourself to guide you to what’s most important & right.

This means you’re ALWAYS thinking about things, no matter if you’re aware of it or not:

  • App changes & optimizations
  • Background processing for solutions to problems
  • Self-talk to motivate and combat self-doubt

Then, sometimes, magic happens, and out of nowhere an idea explodes into your head. I’ve learned, painfully, that you HAVE to immediately write down these thoughts, no matter what you’re doing. Brain phantoms are fleeting, and unrecoverable if ignored.

The drawing above is an example of a 💥 moment. The fully-formed image spit out of my head one night while lying in bed reading before going to sleep. It’s for a re-design of the page that shows all your daily check-in stats. Although I hadn’t been planning on making any specific changes, somewhere in that bucket of 1,001 things I knew updates were needed to better convey the info.

The next day showed what’s most awesome about running everything myself: With no approval needed, no emails exchanged, and no time wasted, I made the design changes in the app & immediately shipped the update to all users (web apps FTW!)

Moments like this feel incredible, and confirm that I was right to declare my independence.

(Alt view: I declare your designs crap, Tim! Get thee a professional Designer!)
