I was finally able to try out a Waymo driverless car! I’m in Phoenix visiting my Dad, and took one from the airport. It was amazing & really did feel like the future.
The trip took longer, as it couldn’t drive on the highway and had to take the slower side roads. But it ended up being about 50% cheaper than Lyft/Uber, some of that because you didn’t have to tip the “driver”.
Even the pickup experience was better, as it flashed my initials on its dome (though you can’t see it here):
It wasn’t shy about slightly cutting off cars pulling into traffic:
It always went exactly the speed limit, which means we got passed a lot:
The intersections and turns were the weirdest at first:
Especially wide sweeping ones:
You really do get used to it very quickly, though, and learn that your big worry is other drivers, not the fact that you don’t have one.
