One of the things I committed to at the start of this year was posting something here every day. I did pretty well the first few months, mainly because I was posting a link recommendation each weekday as a forcing function.
The problem with forcing functions is that they start to feel…forced, and I thus lost the joy in finding good links & talking about them. So I stopped. And as a result, I fell of the daily posting train (except when I took the bus).
I miss recommending stuff, though, especially when I stumble upon something I really want to surface to the world. This week, that has been the Premodernist channel on YouTube.
It’s just a dude talking about history, but it/he’s sooo good! I’m trying to figure out what differentiates him from dry historians, but in the meantime I’m just consuming all his channel’s videos in order.
You should too, but start with this one, the one that got me lovingly hooked. It’s just such a super-engaging way to tell history →
Bonus challenge: Try to find out the historian’s real name (and it’s not Hilary Davidson). He clearly doesn’t want it known.
