Centuries Suck

I’ve mentioned that I’m reading lots of history books to fuel my Drink•Eat•Walk stories. One of the most frustrating things for my simple brain when reading these books is constantly having to translate century references into actual years. Ex: “18th century means 1700s” and “19th century means 1800s”. I hate it.

Why do writers love referencing centuries? What value do centuries add? Everybody, probably including them, stops reading/listening so they can do their own translation. Why not just say “1700s” or 1800s? No translations needed and you even save a syllable. So stupid.
