DC Food Tour Learnings — TTFD
A continuation of this series On my first couple of DC food tours I had guests meet me at the fountain in the center of Dupont Circle. It’s the perfect local DC neighborhood meetup spot, with lots of benches & seats, and it’s alive with people & activity, especially at the 5pm meetup time. After…

DC Food Tour Learnings — Reviews-22
A tour business like Drink•Eat•Walk relies on sites like Tripadvisor & Viator (the same company since 2014!), and Get Your Guide to bring in business, especially in the first season (I wrote about this here). The issue is that you can’t really get business on these platforms without reviews. Indeed, they state that they won’t…

Toilet Inspiration
I’m trying to write & post something, somewhere, every day this year. Two months in and I’m definitely not hitting this goal. It’s partially because some days I just have nothing to say, and I don’t want to force it. So, sometimes, for inspiration, I’ll look back through the photos I’ve taken in the past…
-

First Tour & Route
Ok, I think I’ve figured out the stops & route for the first Drink•Eat•Walk tour I’m going to offer: Drink•Eat•Walk → Dupont Circle & Adams Morgan Here’s a summary of the tour: Here are the things I’ll be discussing on the tour (at the stops or while walking): I’ve pretty much known for a few…
-

Searching for Gold
I’ve lived in my current apartment building for 3+ years (perhaps the place I’ve been in the longest since high school?). That means I’ve been able to track things over time, and the number one thing I look forward to each year are the changes in the leaf colors in the trees in the courtyard…
-

Walking Practice
I walked out another potential tour route today, this time on Roosevelt Island on the Potomac. It’s an amazing place that most folks never visit, even locals. So, potentially perfect for Drink•Eat•Walk. Then again, everything outdoors here seems perfect during autumn.
-

DC Food Tour Learnings → Part 1
I took a Georgetown food tour in DC last weekend, partially because I’d never taken one here before and wanted to learn more about Georgetown, and partially to check out how other local companies are running their food tours. I’m so glad I took it. The tour was good, and I learned a bit about…

A Halloween Killing
A teen walking on the street was looking at her phone, and not where she was going. So, I let her walk right into me, as I always do now, to prove a point. Teen: <stunned & embarrassed> “I’m sorry sir!” Me: <stunned & laughing> “Sir‽ Wow, do I really look that old?” Teen: <earnestly>”I…

Atlas Mapping
I love maps, and have lots of them up on my walls. I also have a great National Geographic Atlas that’s so much fun to browse through, or look for specific things in. It’s kinda big, though, and a tad annoying to pull off the shelf and open up. I’ve always wanted to just have…
-

Same Same, but Different
I discussed in my Origins post that there wasn’t really anything like Drink•Eat•Walk in DC, which helped convince me to start building it. I still think there’s nothing exactly the same, but the more I’m researching the market, the more overlaps I’m seeing from other tours in DC. I’m still feeling good about my prospects,…
-

Good Research Timing
I’ve been deep the process of finding places & walking potential routes for Drink•Eat•Walk. In doing so, I realized that I might want to offer different types of tours, including ones that will involve even more walking, maybe even real hiking. One hiking tour (Drink•Eat•Hike?) could be in DC’s huge, beautiful, right-in-our-neighborhood Rock Creek Park.…

Back to Work
The daily posting I committed to at the start of the year has really become…not daily. It was a lot of effort to travel like I just did on my bus journey, and pumping out a post each day also took lots of time & work. The thing is, I really enjoyed the daily writing…
-

Haynes Point Station
Haynes Point is essentially the “riding the bus” of golf courses. I, thus, ♥️ it
-

Home Gear
Some manually-hacked gear from home that I didn’t realize how much I missed No idea what any of the stickers are nor where I got them
-

Motorcade Moron
I was going to do a post about how running into the Vice President’s motorcade today right outside my building was a nice welcome back to DC (though some locals hate the motorcades, I love ’em), and a reminder how unique it is here: But then I looked at these pics and saw just how…
-

Final Stats
Pittsburgh to DC was my final bus leg, which means I’m now back home! The DC Greyhound station doesn’t present well upon initial arrival — you’re in the parking garage: But you then emerge into Union Station, which makes it rank as the nicest bus station of my journey. (DC locals who dare challenge me…

Empty Gym Costs
One of the benefits to working full-time on idydit.com is that I get to go to the gym when nobody else is there. So, it’s just me that can focus on all the French bulldogs 💩ing in the dog park right outside the windows.
-

Today’s Working Spot
Working out of the Mt. Pleasant library in NW DC today. It’s usually full of people, yet still mostly quiet. Except for when the teens arrive, or when the woman is here that continuously, joyously, loudly LOLs watching stuff on the computer ♥️

Pink Snow City
I’ve seen pink sand beaches, but didn’t know anything about pink snow until earlier this week. Must have been caused by the eclipse.
-

DC Ginkgos
It’s that magical time of year when the leaves from the Ginkgos “snow” down the sides-streets of DC
-

Neon TVs
Saw this giant creation yesterday at the newly re-opened American Art Museum. The little TVs within each state played content from the state, eg. landscapes, events, famous people. And for DC, a camera in the hall captured you and showed it on a tiny little screen. Pretty cool.
-

Knitting Hope
I see this knitting krewe all the time in the Kogod Courtyard, and it always gives me a little smile, and a little hope that all is good in the world (despite the woman glaring at me in the pic). There was even a fella with them today.
-

Bad Karma
The intersection of 14th & U, right next to my apartment, continues its curse of havoc & violence. Saw this crash today on my walk to the grocery store. More details about it here.
-

Argentina Election
One of the cool little things about living in DC is when you get small glimpses into the outside world through the Embassies. Ex: Today is Election Day in Argentina 🇦🇷
-

Home Office
There have been no posts from me this week about working from a library or cafe. Why not? I worked from my home “office” all week. The desk came with the apartment as a built-in (which I’ve heard most folks use as a bar), and it’s a weird mid-height, so I can’t really sit normally,…
-

Cleveland Park Library
I seem to write about libraries so much, maybe I should just make this a library blog, where I travel around the city, region, country, world, and work out of different libraries. The work would then be writing about the libraries. This type of meta-work is how many income-independent folks like me are hustling to…

Baltimore Day
Had a great, fun, long day yesterday. It started with Pups in the Pool as my apartment building ends its pool season. Then Amtrak up to Baltimore: For a Stevie Nicks + Billie Joel concert: Where I found my favorite urinal ever — privacy in the crowd! Stevie was great: And so was Billy, so…

West End Library
I know I’ve written about it before, but the West End library in DC really is a great place to work out of. It’s in a nice part of the city, so is also a little bit calmer than other outlets. Bonus: It has a juicy history involving Ralph Nader. And VP Harris once lived…
-

“Hmmmm, where did I put my EarPods after my workout today?” Miraculously, they survived & still work great! Apple products are good at being doused in water.

I realized yesterday how much I love cobbler/shoe repair shops. They all pretty much have the same cluttered look & feel, and they’re always owned by a friendly old man. Plus, it make you feel good that you’re repairing them, rather than just throwing them out & buying a new pair. I think I’ve been…
-

U Street
I live on U St here in NW DC. It’s often called “The Historic U Street Corridor” as it was one of the original big entertainment areas back in the day, especially for African Americans — it was once dubbed “Black Broadway“. It’s a great place to live, as it’s still a fun area with…
-

One of the interesting offshoots of thinking about building things is that you start to see the world through different eyes. Ex: This is the wall in the restroom at The Salt Line in DC. I’ve seen this wall a lot, as I used to live next door to The Salt Line, and it’s where…

I’m not sure I’ve ever used a pen so much that it’s run out of ink. Sure, they stop working all the time, but I always wondered what kind of person used, and didn’t lose, a pen enough to wear it out. Turns out, that kind of person is me. It’s especially weird that it’s…
-

MLK Library
I worked out of MLK Library in DC today. What a great place! It has lots of spots to work, a good cafe with some of the cheapest good coffee I’ve had in the city, and is filled with a wonderful cross-section of folks. The renovation was a grand success.

Dog 💩 Park
The gym in my apartment building looks out on to the building’s dog park. Yep, most fancy new apartment buildings in DC have their own private dog parks, usually filled with French Bulldogs & Labradoodlish-type dogs. Looking out on the dogs running & playing definitely helps break up the monotony of the treadmill. But, there’s…
-

I’m finally doing some work with the projects listed on eyeintim.com, and I’d considered joining WeWork to get out of my apartment to work. Although it seems that option might not be available soon, it’s no matter, as I’ve really been enjoying working in the common area at the top floor of my apartment building.…
-

I’ve been recently riding the bus here in DC a lot more, mostly to avoid walking in the stupid heat. My favorite is when there’s a double bus & you get this jump seat in the connecting area. You feel dumb & on stage sitting there, but that’s kinda why it seems so fun.
-

I like to think of myself as a Minimalist, but I know I still have way too many things to really be considered a card-carrying member. Ex: This pile of backpacks, bags, and sacks that I pretty much never use. There has to be at least 30 of them in there. I store them stuffed…

I’m astounded. I really did accidentally tip about 12 solid ounces of water directly into my computer’s keyboard a couple of weeks ago. The prognosis seemed negative after a week, but…. I’m posting this from that computer. It survived. It’s alive. It works! Perfectly. I didn’t do anything except wait because I didn’t want to…
-

I’ve been walking through it regularly the past couple of years, but just realized that Adams Morgan’s 18th street here in DC has been taken over by Streeteries. I love them, but admit they’re a tad ugly from the other side of the street, as these pics show. But they’re great to sit in, and…
-

DC is small, so I assumed I’d hiked pretty much every place you could over the years. But I stumbled upon a new trail today. It connects onto a more well-known/worn trail, but still a nice little bit of urban hike newness for me in underrated DC.
-

Many years ago, I proclaimed that I would never support the Washington Football Team until they got rid of their terrible owner. I honestly never thought it would happen in my lifetime. But the American football phantoms have answered, and the Commanders are now my second favorite team. It’s nice to have a hometown NFL…

A video of a massive rainstorm that rolled through, and actually prevented me from going out, happily — I wanted to watch the storm instead

Noticing statues in Iceland has opened my eyes to DC statues. We have all the well-known ones, of course: famous US Presidents, Generals, Statesmen. But DC is quirkier than you might think, and my favorite park, Meridian Hill, shows that with some of its statues. We start with a President, but not exactly the most…

The Metro has gotten pretty crowded lately, and the heat makes it feel stuffier than it already is. So getting a car to yourself feels extra special these days, even if it means riding it @ 8am on a Saturday to get one.
-

Update: The Genius Bar instead put the “arrr!” in it: $1000 to fix (vs. $1700 to purchase anew). I’m so dumb — it’s only 10 months old! I can’t believe how much effort I put into protecting this little fella from the cruel world outside, when the actual enemy was the clown typing on it…
-

This is my MacBook Air. I bought it about year ago in preparation for post-LiveSafe life, and it’s been my constant companion since. I carried it with me through Japan, France, Iceland, and even across the Pyrenees & Spain, adding precious kilos to the weight I was carrying, burdening me with worry about it getting…

LLC Mail
Well look at that — eyeintim LLC received its first official mail!
-

Ahhh, the first day of Summer. Which means trees start…shedding their leaves?
-

Finally visited the new Tatte near me, and it’s a great hang-out-with-a-laptop spot — I was one of about 20 people on one when I was there today. I’ll definitely be doing lots of eyeintim LLC work out of there.

That’s it, I’ve decided: Swizzler has the best burger in DC, and it’s steal at $7.50. Thanks for the guidance https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2023/best-burgers-washington-dc/ . Probably good that it’s across town for me, though.

A few months ago I was happily spending all day outside, every day, walking, walking, walking, living out of a bag, wearing the same thing every day. Now I spend all day on the computer (revamping this site & building others!) while a little machine pumps out pleasant (I assume) artificial smells into the rooftop…
-

That’s it, I’m convinced. With their latest changes moving the security area, DC’s National is my favorite airport in the States. It’s small, but does pretty much everything right: • Easy access by Metro • Logical, coherent security area • Fantastic food choices (I’ve actually eaten at places upon arrival) • Easy to get around, even…

I joyously went to yet another Nats game last week, and they had fireworks after. The coolest thing about it wasn’t the fireworks (I mean, do older folk really enjoy actual fireworks anymore?), it was that many of the players’ families sat on the field & watched, and some of the players even joined. It…

The thing that’s most stressed me out while not working is my lack of health care coverage – if I’m going to go bankrupt, I want to have fun doing it. So I was relieved to finally sign up for some ObamaCare, purchasing coverage from my beloved Kaiser Permanente. It certainly ain’t cheap, but it’s…

I’m pretty sure I didn’t see even a hint of pickleball anywhere outside the US. But I’m glad I’m back playing it, making sure I stay in the wave as it crashes over the country & all its courts . (Next Up: Grab ahold of ChatGPT)

Meridian Hill Park
Meridian Hill Park is just the best. White, brown, black, whatever; straight, queer, trans, whatever; young; old; bros; hippies; nerds; soccer; corn hole; frisbee; readers; musicians; smokers; blankets; chairs; hammocks – we’re all here, especially on an early-summer holiday weekend. ♥️ DC.

Just kidding – golf again!

Last week = Golf every day This week = Nats game every day

Great to be back in DC watching the worlds most exciting boring sport

The Japan-France-Spain-Iceland portion of my #walkabout is done. Which now means scintillating DC content like recommendations for one-purpose appliances like this magic egg steamer.

One of the best things about travel, if you’ve done it right, is coming home. To friends. To calm. To familiar. But, hopefully, you see things differently than you did before

Today’s library week destination was the West End Library It’s one of the newest, and just perfect. Located in a fancy condo building, it has a Bluestone Lane attached to it, adding some wonderful cafe chatter as background white noise. That said, library visits are proving to be boring. I wanted to leave as soon…
-
Library week! Kicked it off with the Southwest Neighborhood Library It’s a new & nice one, built to handle the diverse audience they’re serving these days. The folks there during my visit reflected this: Old people reading newspapers Tech bro on his laptop w/ an extra monitor setup Flirting teens pretending to look for book…

NOBODY HOME – Today’s museum was the National Zoo. Definitively proving this was a good week to go to DC museums, there was nobody there. I think I saw maybe 100 people the entire time? But, a cost: Because it’s winter, there were far fewer creatures to see. Sure, the mammals & monkeys were in…
-
This Way to Mammals & Rest Rooms Today was the National Museum of Natural History. What a great museum! Huge, with tons of great visuals & writing. It’s full of energy & wonder, and goes DEEP into many topics, eg. minerals; planetary development; human evolution (I’m sure Creationists do lots of squirming in this museum…
-
Unarchived Wish Today’s museum was the National Archives Museum. Overall a pretty good one, as you can’t go wrong when you can show off the Magna Carta, Declaration, Constitution, and Bill of Rights. It was also empty, so no jostling to read the unreadable documents. You can’t take pics in there, however. So what’s this…

Kicked off museum week at the National Museum of American History. Unfortunately, as is normal, it really did nothing for me. No exhibit seemed that interesting, and I don’t think I learned anything. There’s probably no need for me to go here again. That said, somehow this pic came out better than viewing it in…
