Fargo, North Dakota

Like Coeur d’Alene, Fargo is one of those uniquely-named places that’s always stuck in my head, and that I was looking forward to visiting on this #workabout. After my dud of a time in Bismarck, however, my expectations were very, very low. But Fargo turned out to actually be kinda nice!

Not the bus station I arrived at, though, and it was 4.5 industrial miles from my Airbnb (so I had to take a stupid Lyft):

Fargo just felt much more modern, vibrant, and welcoming than Bismarck:

It had a great main downtown street, Broadway, filled with lots of good shops, restaurants, and bars (lotta bison statues everywhere in Fargo)

And they have a big Red River Market every Saturday that brought out lots of folks to the main square:

And, very surprisingly to me, they had a big Pride Parade on Sunday, and it seemed to bring out pretty much everyone in town. Good job Fargo!

Fargo is right on the Red River, which is the border with Minnesota. This pic is actually taken from Moorehead, MN, the twin city to Fargo:

The river was nothing special, but it’s right next to town, and there are lots of pleasant parks & trails all along it (and that black & white building on the right is where my very nice Airbnb was). Good job Fargo!

The perfectly-kept-up houses & giant streets I endlessly walked through in Bismarck were also in Fargo, so I guess it must be a North Dakota thing:

And the same train tracks that have followed me since Spokane went right through downtown:

Fargo is the home to North Dakota State University, the arch-enemy of my beloved JMU. Their campus is gorgeous and, of course, in perfect condition:

Also gorgeous is the big brew pub in town, Drekker Brewing Company:

It even had an attached giant food court/mall thingy, Brewhalla, also owned & run by Drekker:

It’s a big wedding spot, and this midwesterner wedding crew were very serious about their beers (which, I think, intimidated me into this ridic “smile”)

The folks in town were also much, much friendlier than Bismarck, and I had lots of good conversations. Good job Fargo!

Now they just need to work on their bus station/stops — this is the one I used to get out of town:

Loaf’njug — doesn’t get any more straightforward midwestern than that!

Also, you look like a creepy geezer trying to get in that pic with the ladies. How much more than usual was your hand shaking trying to take that pic?

It was the least joyful wedding party I’ve ever seen. Just totally focused on the drinks.
